Prof. Md. Shakilur Rahman, PhD
Senior Consultant (Nuclear Physicist and Radiation Protection Specialist)
Nuclear Physicist | Medical Radiation Physicist | International Research Leader
Prof. Dr. Md. Shakilur Rahman is a world-class researcher with over 25 years of distinguished experience in
Nuclear Physics and Medical Radiation Physics, integrating advanced scientific research with impactful applications in energy, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. His work uniquely bridges fundamental nuclear
science with real-world solutions in radioactive waste management, nuclear security, and precision cancer treatment,
making him a globally recognized leader in both disciplines.
He earned his PhD in Nuclear and Particle Physics from Kyungpook National University, South Korea, where he
also served as a Research Professor. His research at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory focused on high-energy
photonuclear reactions using electron accelerators, generating critical nuclear data such as photonuclear cross-
sections, isomeric yield ratios, and nuclear level density parameters. These outputs play a vital role in the design and
optimization of Accelerator-Driven Subcritical Systems (ADSS), providing a scientifically advanced solution for the
transmutation and reduction of high-level radioactive waste generated from nuclear power plants. His contributions
significantly advance clean nuclear energy and long-term environmental protection.
Dr. Rahman is a recipient of the prestigious Brain Pool Scientist Award from the Korean Federation of Science and
Technology Societies (KOFST), funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, recognizing his global excellence in
scientific research. Under this program, he conducted advanced research on photonuclear data and medical isotope
production, further strengthening international collaboration and innovation. A major highlight of his career includes
his postdoctoral research in Japan, where he contributed to radioactive waste management solutions following the
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. His work focused on advanced technologies for the separation
and treatment of high-level radioactive waste, addressing one of the most critical nuclear safety challenges in
modern history.
In parallel, Dr. Rahman has made significant contributions as a Medical Radiation Physicist, particularly in cancer
treatment and radiation safety. He led nationwide initiatives in radiotherapy dosimetry, quality assurance, and
radiation protection, improving treatment accuracy and patient safety across multiple cancer centers and benefiting
tens of thousands of patients annually. He also played a leading role in establishing a Secondary Standard Dosimetry
Laboratory (SSDL), ensuring internationally traceable radiation calibration standards for medical, industrial, and
research applications.
Dr. Rahman served for more than two decades as Chief Scientist and Director of the Nuclear Safety, Security and
Safeguards Division at the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. He currently works as a Senior Consultant in
Nuclear and Radiological Instrumentation, collaborating with international partners, including industry stakeholders
in Japan. His expertise supports advancements in nuclear safety, radiation detection, and healthcare technologies
aligned with global standards.
An internationally engaged scientist, Prof. Dr. Rahman has actively participated in research collaborations,
conferences, and scientific programs across the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Austria,
Thailand, India, Czech Republic and many other countries, contributing to global knowledge exchange and
technology transfer. He is also a dedicated educator and mentor, having supervised 43 students across PhD, M.Phil.,
MS, and undergraduate levels, and served as an adjunct professor at the leading public universities.
With over 100 peer-reviewed publications, extensive conference contributions, and leadership in scientific journals,
Dr. Rahman continues to influence both academic research and practical applications worldwide. His work stands at
the intersection of nuclear innovation and medical advancement—driving progress in clean energy, enabling
solutions for high-level radioactive waste, strengthening nuclear security, and improving global healthcare outcomes.
